Permits for Piers & Docks in Big Cedar Lake:

Before installing a dock or boat lift on Big Cedar Lake, understanding local and state regulations is important. Always check with local authorities to confirm your project follows all guidelines and regulations. Our experts are happy to assist you.

Pier Guidelines:

  • "Legacy piers" (installed before April 17, 2012) are generally exempt from state permits if they meet certain standards and haven't been altered beyond their original size.
  • Most new piers don’t need a DNR permit if they follow state size and placement rules but must comply with local ordinances.
  • Permits may be needed if a pier exceeds size limits or affects navigation.
  • Piers must be within your riparian zone.
  • Piers can extend to 3 feet of water depth or as far as needed for boat lifts (but not past municipal pierhead line).
  • Maximum width for any pier section is 6 feet.
  • Pier platforms can’t exceed 200 sq. ft.
  • Solid-fill piers require a special permit.
  • Local rules may limit the number of boat slips or lifts per property.
  • Piers and boat lifts must not interfere with neighboring riparian rights or navigation.
  • Registration of older piers may be required—check with the Wisconsin DNR.
