Permits for Piers & Docks in Moose
Before installing a dock or boat lift on Moose Lake, understanding local and state regulations is important. Always check with local authorities to confirm your project follows all guidelines and regulations. Our experts are happy to assist you.
Pier Guidelines:
- Legacy Piers: Existing piers placed before April 17, 2012, are exempt from DNR permits if unmodified and compliant with original dimensions.
- New Piers: Most new piers are exempt from permits if they meet Wisconsin DNR standards (≤6 feet in width, ≤200 sq. ft platform and up to 2 boat slips for the first 50 ft of shoreline + 1 per additional 50 ft for non-commercial properties); permits are required for solid-fill piers, oversized structures or projects affecting navigation or water quality.
- Construction Standards: Floating or pile-supported piers are allowed, but solid piers (e.g., earth or rock-filled) require DNR permits; materials such as polystyrene floats must be coated and metal/plastic drums must be corrosion-resistant.
- Pre-Construction Checks: Piers must not obstruct navigation or harm aquatic habitats and must stay within the owner’s riparian zone (exclusive waterfront area).
