Permits for Piers & Docks in Long Lake

Before installing a dock or boat lift on Long Lake, understanding local and state regulations is important. Always check with local authorities to confirm your project follows all guidelines and regulations. Our experts are happy to assist you.

Pier Guidelines:

  • Legacy Piers: Piers placed before April 17, 2012, are exempt from DNR permits if unmodified and meet original dimensions.
  • New Piers: Most new piers are exempt if they meet DNR standards (≤6 feet width per section, ≤200 sq. ft platform, 2 boat slips for the first 50 ft of shoreline, +1 per additional 50 ft of non-commercial shoreline).
  • Permit Required: Permits are required for solid-fill piers, oversized structures or projects affecting navigation, water quality or riparian rights.
  • Construction Standards: Solid piers require permits; materials like polystyrene floats must be coated and metal/plastic drums must be corrosion-resistant.
  • Local Ordinances: Long Lake follows state standards for private docks unless county-specific rules apply; verify with local authorities for restrictions.
  • Boat Slip Limits: Multi-family/commercial docks can have 4 slips per 50 ft of shoreline on lakes ≥50 acres, with additional slips for each extra 50 ft.
  • Pre-Construction Checks: Piers must not block waterways or harm aquatic habitats and must remain within the owner’s exclusive waterfront area.
