Permits for Piers & Docks in Little Muskego Lake

Before installing a dock or boat lift on Little Muskego Lake, understanding local and state regulations is important. Always check with local authorities to confirm your project follows all guidelines and regulations. Our experts are happy to assist you.

Pier Guidelines:

  • Existing piers placed before April 17, 2012, are exempt from state permits if unmodified and compliant with original dimensions.
  • Exempt from state permits if meeting Wisconsin DNR standards (≤6 ft width per section, ≤200 sq. ft platform, adherence to boat slip limits).
  • Non-commercial properties: 2 slips for the first 50 ft of shoreline + 1 slip per additional 50 ft.
  • Personal watercraft: 2 for the first 50 ft + 1 per additional 50 ft.
  • Shoreline modifications (e.g., docks, piers) require city permits in Muskego.
  • Applications must include scaled maps, insurance proof ($1M liability) and DNR compliance details.
  • Solid Piers: Prohibited without a DNR permit due to environmental concerns (e.g., littoral drift disruption).
  • Pre-2012 piers cannot be enlarged without a DNR individual permit.
  • New piers exceeding exemptions (e.g., oversized platforms) require DNR approval.
